Career Opportunity – Indigenous Relations Advisor

Benga Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Riversdale Resources Limited, is proposing to develop a steelmaking coal mine in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, Canada, referred to as the Grassy Mountain Project.  We are currently in the permitting application phase of the project and are planning an open-cut mine, targeting 4.5 million tonnes of hard coking coal per year over a minimum 25-year mine life and 385 full-time positions.   

Reporting to the Senior Manager Public Relations, the Indigenous Relations Advisor works closely with management staff to lead Riversdale’s regional engagement with Indigenous communities and directs the development of lasting and resilient relationships. This role provides leadership in the development of strategic approaches and initiatives to implement and operationalize Riversdale’s Indigenous partnership agreements.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and manage relationships with regional Indigenous partners and communities.
  • Present strategies to supervisors on ways to integrate long-term commitments into operational readiness plans.
  • Advise executive and senior management teams on the integration of cultural awareness initiatives and policies throughout the organization.
  • Maintain and strengthen relationships with Indigenous organizations to stimulate information sharing and encourage future opportunities and partnerships.
  • Develop and execute communication plans to ensure project updates and opportunities are distributed appropriately and efficiently.
  • Identify and respond to issues relating to Indigenous economic, social, land or resource management interests.
  • Recommend mitigation options to reconcile company objectives with Indigenous interests.
  • Assist internal departments with the development and implementation of employment and training and cultural awareness programs.
  • Design and direct field programs linked to the established agreements with Indigenous communities.
  • Internally, assist with the preparation of annual budgets for ongoing relationship management, field programs and external consultant support. Negotiate and develop external budgets and working agreements for Indigenous participation in on-going commitment-related activities.
  • Coordinate with the project management team to develop follow-up programs and processes to ensure that mitigative commitments made during consultations and/or as a component of finalized agreements are implemented, monitored and communicated to Indigenous partners.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education related to natural resource sector (e.g. resource management, environmental science, forestry) or social sciences (e.g. political science, legal, archaeology).
  • 10 years of progressive experience working with regulatory applications and in consultation with Indigenous communities.
  • Full knowledge of provincial regulatory consultation requirements, guidelines and policies.
  • Demonstrated cultural agility and ability to work respectfully and effectively with Indigenous people in a manner that fosters positive community relations and promotes accord.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting field programs, research and analysis related to land use, resource management and development issues.
  • Experience in policy development and implementation and in facilitating the execution of operational agreements with Indigenous communities.
  • Extensive experience identifying priorities and interests in Indigenous communities and collaborating on the development of options to mitigate or address issues and concerns.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and conflict management skills.
  • Excellent computer and organizational skills to document and manage data.
  • Experience developing and implementing increasingly complex plans and leading projects to completion while monitoring and adjusting priorities within a changing environment.

LOCATION

Crowsnest Pass is a mountain community located two hours south of Calgary, Alberta.  Crowsnest Pass has a population of 6000 and offers numerous services, including; a 24-hr emergency, acute and continuing care hospital, schools from kindergarten to grade 12, a sports complex, a championship golf course, major banks / credit union, restaurants and supermarkets.  The area is famous for its spectacular mountain vistas and adventure tourism.  It is a favorite destination for downhill and cross-country skiing, hiking, climbing, mountain biking, caving, fly fishing and hunting.
